MATHLETES turns your gym into a MATH-A-THON for a day with all grade 2 through 6 students ENGAGED in MATH activities in an atmosphere that promotes co-operation, learning, fun & celebration!
Math, although a major component of education, rarely has events to support its importance that can include students of all math abilities. Science fairs, drama presentations, music festivals and athletic events are common place but a math event…not so much. MATHLETES brings math to the forefront reinforcing that math can be FUN, and like other subjects, math is important enough to warrant a special event to participate in and celebrate.
MATHLETES truly is a day of MATH made FUN which helps to build bonds between students, boost moral & build math confidence!
About the creator of Mathletes
Janice Edwards-Kennedy founded The Teaching Table in 2006 creating MATHLETES with goals of inspiring, motivating and building confidence in students using math as her vehicle. She holds degrees in Education, Psychology and Social Work and has worked with children since 1982 in areas that include classrooms, courtrooms, group homes and the community.
During her time as teacher and later as an involved parent in her children’s school board she observed that math was often a subject that had the ability to fuel low academic self esteem for students who were experiencing math challenges. Having struggled with this subject during her early years she is passionate about helping as many students as possible have a positive math experience which goes a long way in building a positive math attitude.
Her energy and passion to have every student leave MATHLETES feeling better about themselves and their math abilities is a key component in the rave reviews MATHLETES receives making MATHLETES a yearly event for many schools across Ontario.
